"If I’d had any idea what those words would mean to me, to my mother and daughter, I’d have fled California without looking back." ---------------- While driving a rural road, Hannah Shire and her aging mother, who suffers from dementia, stop to help a man at the scene of a car accident. The man whispers mysterious words in Hannah’s ear. Soon people want to kill Hannah and her mother for what they “know.” Even law enforcement may be involved. The two women must flee for their lives. But how does Hannah hide her confused mother? Carol just wants to listen to her pop music, wear her favorite purple hat, and go home. And if they turn to Hannah’s twentyseven- year-old daughter, Emily, for help, will she fall into danger as well? Pressed on all sides, Hannah must keep all three generations of women in her family alive. Only then does she learn the threat is not just to her loved ones, but the entire country.

Okay. If you just read my review of Why Did I Love/Hate that Novel, you may be wondering what is up with that review...That's because I clicked on the wrong box. Oh, I did give it 5-Stars and it was helpful--chocked full of useful tips for authors. I found it well-written and oh so useful.

However, what I wrote (because I clicked on the wrong box) was the review for this book, Dark Justice. It was a thrill-ride from moment one until the last chapter. I couldn't put it down. Had a great plot. Suspenseful with that added bit of humor I expect from Brandilyn.

So, my apologies for confusing the book reviews, but you will not be disappointed with either of the books. In fact, buy both. They are that good!

Dark Justice Brandilyn Collins 9780692544655 Books Reviews

The writing is superb. Ms. Collins never disappoints. From the beginning you are hooked and it doesn't stop until the book ends. And it's amazing; there is no bad language, there are no sex scenes, and yet, it's a nonstop adventure. You will never go wrong with any of her books. They are entertaining, and you may even learn something without realizing it until later.
Since I was first introduced to Brandilyn Collins’ books I have been hooked. So when I found out I had missed this one back in November I was beyond upset and I knew I had to read it ASAP! I am so glad I DID, what a spine-chilling story filled with so many twists and turns you may find yourself holding onto the edge of your seat!

Hannah Shire is a very dutiful daughter taking care of an elderly mother with dementia; she longs for the days when her husband was alive and her mother was well. Wanting to help her mom hold on the present, she takes her to the coast for a weekend getaway. On the return trip she decides on a whim to take the beautiful scenic route home. What a mistake that would be!

Not far into the drive Hannah’s mom calls to her attention an overturned car by the roadside, wanting to be of help, Hannah stops. Finding an elderly man lying a few feet from the car Hannah checks to see if he is ok, concerned when he appears to have difficulty breathing she calls 9-11. While waiting on help to arrive the man uses all of his strength to utter a few words to Hannah and her mom. What he begs them to do and what he secretly slips into Hannah’s pocket will forever change the course of their lives!

Despite being questioned at the scene by the police Hannah doesn't divulge what the man said to her and she is released to go home, once there she discovers a flash drive in her coat pocket. The information she finds on that flash drive doesn't make a lot of sense to her so she calls her daughter to ask her to watch it. What she discovers will have them both terrified and running for their lives not knowing who they can trust to help them!

Brandilyn Collins has once again created a suspense so consuming I found myself torn between reading it in one setting or stopping to get a few hours sleep. Without giving anything away let me say this plot could very well happen here in the US and that made it that much more terrorizing to me!! Thank you Brandilyn for a most enjoyable although heart-stopping read!!

Bibliotherapy Brandilyn did a wonderful job describing the effect dementia had on Hannah’s mom. I too have a mom that has dementia and it is very heart-rending to witness your loved one lose their grip on reality.
Brandyn Collins takes the reader into her story from the very first page and the action is nonstop till the end of the book. Who is with the terrorists and who is trying to save the nation? Is there a mole in the police station? I finished in two days, it was very down.
Brandilyn Collins markets her novels as Seatbelt Suspense, promising fast-paced and adrenaline-laced plotting with enough twists and turns to keep the reader guessing. Dark Justice is By The Book’s November selection. It has been a while since we have read one of Collins’ books, but she is a favorite of our group. The premise of this book is certainly relevant today and is the subject of evening news programs — is our electrical grid vulnerable to attack? Collins presents a plausible scenario in which homegrown terrorists are in a race to bring the United States economy and government to its knees. All that is standing in the way of achieving their goals is a 50-something woman, her elderly mother suffering from dementia and her computer whiz daughter. It’s difficult for Hannah, Carol and Emily to identify the bad guys as they evade capture from law enforcement and gun-wielding terrorists.

There is a lot to like about Dark Justice. Strong characters make this novel. Collins takes us inside a family coping with the effects of Alzheimer’s. The frustrations and struggles are handled realistically and with sensitivity. The terror plot could be taken out of today’s headlines. And I loved the combination of first person, third person and Congressional testimony that she uses to tell the story. This novel is all about perceptions and the errors we make when relying heavily on what we feel or think we know. Hannah’s suspicions seem natural at first, but become a bit implausible as the story progresses. I’ll chalk that up to the extreme fatigue she endures trying to keep her mother calm while evading attacks from all sides.

I’m looking forward to discussing Dark Justice with my book club. Have you read it? We’d love to know what you thought.

Recommended.

Audience adults.
